Roleplay in GTA V turns Los Santos into a city where every player is a character: a cop, a paramedic, a mechanic, a lawyer, a business owner or a gang member. There are no scripted missions — the story comes from players interacting with each other. On TOPSPAWN, GTA RP servers are FiveM servers: you'll need GTA V on PC and the FiveM client.
The first thing that sets servers apart is how strict they are. Serious RP means staying in character at all times and following clear rules (no metagaming, no random violence), and usually comes with a whitelist and an application on Discord. Semi-RP is more relaxed and a friendlier place to start. Then there's the setting: a classic modern city, gang-focused servers, servers built around jobs and the economy, or more unusual worlds. Every server adds its own scripts for jobs, housing, phones and vehicles.
Pick a server in a language you're comfortable roleplaying in, then look at the expected level of RP, whether there's a whitelist, the posted rules and how active the Discord is — that's where recruitment and announcements happen. Read the rules before you first connect: it's the difference between a smooth start in the city and a quick ban. If your evenings are busy, check which time zone the community plays in. TOPSPAWN rankings come from player votes: vote without an account, once every two hours per server, and add your in-game name if there are rewards. Running a city? Listing it is free with an account: pick FiveM and the Roleplay mode, and it's published once approved.
FiveM is the platform that lets you play GTA V on community servers. GTA RP is its most popular use: cities where you play a character. Other FiveM servers offer racing, drift or freeroam; you'll find them on the FiveM servers page.
A whitelist is an application system where you submit a character sheet, motivation and backstory before being accepted by the staff. It's common on serious RP servers to maintain high narrative quality and keep out trolls.
Open the server page and click "Vote": no account needed, one vote every two hours per server, with your in-game name if the server offers rewards.
Create an account, click "Add a server", pick the FiveM game and the Roleplay or RP Serious mode, then enter your server's address and cfx.re code. It's published once approved.
