How to Pick the Right GTA RP Server on FiveM
Contents
Want to get into GTA RP but have no idea which city to join? You're not alone. There are hundreds of FiveM servers out there, and they couldn't be more different. Some expect you to stay in character from start to finish, others are way more laid-back. Some make you apply first, others let you jump straight in.
The good news: check a few simple things and you'll dodge the bad experiences and find a city you actually want to come back to. Here's how.
What you need before you start
To play GTA RP, you'll need:
- GTA V on PC (Steam, Epic Games or the Rockstar Games Launcher). FiveM doesn't exist on console.
- The FiveM client, free from the official website.
- A decent mic. Almost everything in RP happens over voice.
- Discord, because that's where applications, announcements and support live.
FiveM Legacy or Enhanced: which one do you need?
Since July 2026, FiveM comes in two flavors:
- FiveM Legacy, for the classic version of GTA V. This is what the vast majority of servers still run.
- FiveM for GTA V Enhanced, for the remastered version of the game. It's still in early access, so expect bugs.
Here's the catch: a server runs either Legacy or Enhanced, not both. You can't join an Enhanced server with the Legacy client, or the other way round. If you're new, install Legacy and check the city's Discord to see which version it uses.
Serious RP, semi-RP or freeroam: pick your vibe
Before you start browsing servers, figure out what kind of experience you're after.
| Type | What it means | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Serious RP | You stay in character at all times, with strict rules and usually a whitelist. | Players who want deep immersion and long storylines. |
| Semi-RP | Roleplay still comes first, but the vibe is more relaxed and getting in is easier. | First-timers or anyone who wants less pressure. |
| Freeroam / action | Little to no RP: racing, drifting, PvP, stunts. | Players who mostly want to mess around with friends. |
If you've never done RP before, semi-RP is usually the best way in. You'll learn the basics without getting punished for every small mistake.
Whitelisted or not: what's the difference?
A whitelist is a list of players allowed into the city. To get on it, you'll usually apply on Discord: introduce your character, answer a few questions about the rules, and sometimes do a quick voice interview.
Whitelisted servers:
- Players are more invested and the RP tends to be better.
- There are fewer trolls.
- But you'll have to wait, sometimes several days depending on the server.
Non-whitelisted servers:
- You can play right away.
- They're great for trying out several cities.
- But the quality of RP varies a lot more.
A solid approach: start on a non-whitelisted server to learn the ropes, then apply to a whitelisted city once you know what you like.
6 things to check before you join a city
1. The language
Playing a character in a language you're not comfortable with gets frustrating fast. Filter by language and pick one you can actually roleplay in.
2. The rules
A good server has clear, easy-to-find rules that explain the key terms. At a minimum, look for:
- Metagaming: using out-of-character info in-game (a stream, a Discord message…).
- Powergaming: forcing unrealistic actions or giving the other player no chance to respond.
- RDM (random deathmatch): killing someone with no RP reason.
- Fear RP: your character values their life and should act like it when there's a gun in their face.
Copy-pasted, vague or missing rules are usually a red flag.
3. How active the Discord is
Check the recent announcements, help channels and ticket activity. If nobody has replied in two weeks, that tells you a lot about the server.
4. Players online… when you play
A city can be packed at 10 p.m. and empty in the afternoon. Check the player count during the hours you actually play. No people, no scenes.
5. The staff
Is there a visible moderation team? A ticket system? Do new players get answers quickly? Active staff is what saves your night when a conflict breaks out.
6. Stability over script count
A city with 400 scripts that crashes every hour is less fun than a simpler server that just works. Trust player feedback over feature lists.
Your first night in the city
Found your server? Here's how to get off to a good start:
- Keep your character simple. A name, a two-or-three-line backstory, one goal. No need for a novel.
- Reread the rules right before you connect. It's the difference between a smooth start and a quick ban.
- Start with a legal job. Delivery driver, mechanic, taxi: perfect for meeting people and learning the controls.
- Ask questions in the right place. Use Discord or the out-of-character channel, not the chat in the middle of a scene.
- Be patient. The best stories rarely happen on night one.

FAQ
Is GTA RP free?
FiveM is free, but you need to own GTA V on PC. Most servers are free to join.
Can you play GTA RP on PS5 or Xbox?
No. FiveM is PC-only.
How long does a whitelist application take?
It depends entirely on the server, anywhere from a few hours to several days. The expected wait is often posted on their Discord.
What's the difference between GTA RP and FiveM?
FiveM is the platform that lets you play GTA V on community servers. GTA RP is its most popular use: cities where every player plays a character.
