DayZ is post-apocalyptic survival at its most tense: scavenging for food, patching yourself up, avoiding the infected and, above all, deciding what to do when you meet another player. On Chernarus, Livonia or other maps, every encounter can turn into a friendship or an ambush. The DayZ server you join changes all of that.

Servers first split into vanilla (the base game), vanilla+ (a few tweaks) and modded, with traders, extra vehicles, expanded base building or combat zones. Then there's perspective: 1PP (first person only) for realism, or 3PP to see around your character. As for atmosphere, there are open PvP servers, PvE servers where the map and the AI are the main threat, and RP servers with rules on how you behave. Modded servers are joined on PC through a launcher that downloads the required mods for you.

Decide what you're after first — pure survival, building, roleplay or combat. Then check the perspective, the community's language, how often bases are wiped and whether there's an active Discord. Busy vanilla servers mean more encounters and more fights; smaller modded servers often have a tighter community where people recognise each other. If you're new, a PvE or beginner-friendly server is a gentle way to learn the map.
