Multiplayer Minecraft is a shared world where everyone adds their own block to the build, literally. But there isn't one kind of multiplayer Minecraft — there are dozens, and every Minecraft server picks its own. First check the edition: Java on PC, or Bedrock on consoles, mobile and Windows. Some servers accept both.

Survival and SMP servers keep the base game and add a community, anti-griefing rules and sometimes a player-run economy. Factions servers bring clan wars and raids, Skyblock starts you on a tiny island in the void, and creative gives you unlimited blocks to build with. Minigame servers chain short matches like BedWars and SkyWars, and modded servers run full modpacks you install before joining. Many servers use a whitelist to keep their community close-knit.

Start with your edition and version, then the mode and the community's language — a long-term survival server attracts different players than a minigame hub. Read the rules and see whether the server has a Discord. For modded servers, check which modpack is required and how much memory it needs before you start. On survival servers, ask how land claims and anti-grief protection work — it decides whether your builds are safe while you're offline. Version matters too: a server running an older version may need you to switch your game client before joining.
